Recently the excessive use of straws in cafes has really been getting to me. After cutting down my plastic use at home and switching to a keep cup, the idea of adding a bit of plastic to a drink that I'm perfectly able to consume without it just seems ridiculous (especially after seeing the horrible impact they go on to have once they make it to our oceans). I decided to try to do something about it by writing this email to one of my local cafes, rather than stewing over it. My friend suggested that maybe other people might want to do the same thing so I thought I would share it as a template here.
Dear [insert café name here],
I was at your cafe recently and noticed that you are still using plastic straws. Have you considered not using straws at all or substituting them for a more sustainable option?
I really enjoy visiting [café name] but seeing the large number of straws handed out unnecessarily, just in the space of an hour, makes it very hard for me to continue visiting on an ethical basis. I’m sure many of your customers would be happy to see you implement this change and some wouldn’t even notice since we regularly drink out of cups without straws.
Recent studies have shown the damaging impact of straws on wildlife and the environment (https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/9b5a8a_367e7b9b71874f1e9ed6e772c6907256.pdf). Not using straws is a straightforward way to cut down our impact on the environment and be more sustainable. I hope you will consider making this change.
